Sweden - Europe
Ninjas in Pyjamas is a nordic esports team from Sweden who entered the world of esports in 2000. They had a staggering reputation as one of the best teams on the planet before they stepped back from the scene in 2007. Also known as “NiP”.
They had a huge comeback in 2012 and they set their expectations high once again.
It may be going too far down the timeline, but it is impossible not to mention their epic run in the CPL Winter – 2001 where they managed to win their first big tournament, by defeating Team Xtreme 3 which earned them 1st place.
After that came six years of pure success. They won huge tournaments and acquired best players that absolutely dominated competitions, but in 2007 the team faced some issues and had to step down for a while.
When they came back in 2012, they needed some time to get off the ground again, it didn’t take too long before they managed to compete at the high-level as they used to. They signed players like “f0rest” and “GeT_RiGhT” who still remains in their roster up to this year. NiP dominated the CS:GO scene with many victories in tournaments such as DreamHack, ESL and many other offline and online events.
NiP went on a LAN winning streak of 87-0 before finally losing to Virtus.pro in 2013.
In March of 2014, the team went on to take the 2nd place in ESL Major Series One: Katowice, suffering the loss from Team Virtus Pro. However, the message was successfully sent – the Ninjas were back.
Later in August that year, they captured the title in ESL One: Cologne 2014 by defeating Team Fnatic in the finals.
They ended the year 2014 with another finals performance but came short of the victory once again. DreamHack Winter 2014 ended with them taking 2nd place, losing over team LDLC.
The next year 2015 started pretty well, as they managed to get into another final. This time it was ESL One: Katowice and went against an opponent they knew pretty well – but luck was against them once again, as Team Fnatic took another win over them.
It was nothing but success for them since then. They went on a rampage, winning 1st place in the following tournaments:
– StarLadder i-League StarSeries Season 2
– Intel Extreme Masters XI – Oakland
– DreamHack Open Valencia 2017
– Intel Extreme Masters XII – Oakland
There is no doubt that by following their own recipe for success, Ninjas will rise again to the level they were on before. The esports world just was not the same without them, and we sure hope to never see them leave for long over again.
